Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office patrol car [FILE]
The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office was hit by “detected suspicious activity” and is experiencing computer outages as of Sunday afternoon, according to multiple law enforcement sources.
The issue was first reported by The Tributary and was independently confirmed by First Coast News, the Times-Union news partner. The two initially reported a possible ransomware attack.
But the city said JSO and the city weren’t subjects of ransomware attacks.
As of 6 p.m. Sunday, the situation is contained and all systems are functioning properly, Chief Administrative Office Brian Hughes said in a statement. However, the city of Jacksonville and JSO have taken precautionary measures to limit access while cyber security teams “finish a deep dive throughout the system,” Hughes said.

A police report from a Sunday traffic stop references the problem, saying a prisoner intake sergeant approved the report “due to citywide internet outages.” The issue was also discussed at first appearance court, known as J1, according to people who were there.
First Coast News has reached out to JSO for comment and official confirmation, as well as the Mayor’s Office, the State Attorney’s Office and the FBI. This is a developing story.
At this time, it is not clear to what extent JSO’s systems have been affected, or for how long.
